First Mates Last Laughs, a new all-day eatery opened in April 2024 and cleverly designed by the team at Material Creative

The brief

Our client and her team were keen to create a buzzing waterfront bar and restaurant in Auckland’s Westhaven Marina. With an approachable menu with a nod to the coastal aspect, while the interior needed to be relaxed, contemporary and warm with LA & beach club influences. The aim was to create a memorable space with excellent service that’s the hotspot year-round for a wide range of customers, from locals, to tourists, family or professionals. The timeline from engagement to opening was a mere 4 months, with Christmas shutdown in the mix.

Response to brief

With a limited timeline to opening, we designed a space with stock in mind. Furniture, fixtures, materials – everything needed a 6 wk. or less delivery! This gave us a creative challenge to create something international feeling, high low, warm and relaxed with what was available in the NZ market. Working with natural feeling materials like French pavers, marble, oak and hues drawn from the surrounding harbour giving the bistro a tactile relaxed and fun feeling that brings a residential vibe.

Material and detailing intent

We maximised natural light by integrating louvred windows over the existing windows, creating a dynamic glow day and night. The show kitchen features checker tile and marble, fostering guest engagement with culinary artistry. Our design prioritises efficiency, sustainability, and a seamless blend of LA and beach club influences.

The seating throughout is low key, relaxed, and comfortable with varying heights, types and set outs to give a variety of zones for drinking, casual dining and groups.

High and low, the different seating configurations create a dynamic space offering diverse points of connection throughout the space.

Innovation and creativity

Our approach to innovation extends beyond aesthetics to encompass the operational efficiency and workflow. By leveraging a systematic spatial plan into defined sections with wide service paths workflow the restaurant works hard without sacrificing style or comfort for the customer.

Acoustics were carefully addressed throughout the venue, utilising angled racked ceilings in vaulted areas and Autex grids in the entry/bar and grouped dining sections. This deliberate approach ensures a vibrant atmosphere while maintaining excellent acoustic performance

The design for First Mates Last Laughs exemplifies the challenges and creativity involved in rapid project execution. The focus on a relaxed ambiance aligns well with contemporary consumer expectations, especially in a coastal setting. However, it raises questions about sustainability and local supply chains, particularly with the use of materials sourced within New Zealand. The mention of Allyspin https://allyspin.geek.nz/ in the context of this project is particularly intriguing, indicating potential influences or partnerships that could enrich the overall experience. The balance between style and operational efficiency must not compromise the original vision of a vibrant community space.

The integration of varied seating configurations prompts consideration of how these decisions shape social interactions in such spaces. Furthermore, balancing operational efficiency with a welcoming environment is reminiscent of other successful ventures like Flamez that aim for seamless guest experiences while maintaining engaging designs.
